Long bike rides to the library and candy store, playing Kick the Can with all the neighborhood kids, stopping for ice cream after hiking the trails around Mount Baker, and racing my brothers' match box cars down the slide.  Simple things, but so fun!

I always joke that I was born 2 months early and have been early ever since. I hate being late.  I feel like I'm being rude to others when I'm late. But at the same time, I hate wasting time too, so I always make sure I have a book or something so I can read if I get there early.

I usually keep it simple.

I have never tried to cut my hair. I've cut my girls' bangs and did ok, sometimes a little too short. My mom used to give me perms and that would turn out crazy sometimes!  I hated it.

And Ruby's new life isn't as easy as she envisioned. Marin High School is a place for the rich and famous with their BMWs, chic clothes, and liberal beliefs-a place where she clearly doesn't belong. Even with her new job at the Underground Coffeehouse & Cinema, she is unsure of how to act and feels insecure about who she is. When she tries out for an amateur film group, the puzzle pieces finally begin to fit. And who is this mysterious guy who's messing with her heart?

My Thoughts:

I gotta say, I loved this book!  My only warning would be that Ruby has a gay friend and the issue of homosexuality is lightly addressed, not with approval per se, but with the call to love each other.  I was slightly uncomfortable with it being in the book, but agree with the premise that we are called to love and befriend others, even when we don't always agree with their choices. The gay friend was a minor character.  I don't want to detract from the delightful things in the book in Ruby's character development and the lessons she learns about finding her place in a new town.  I enjoyed watching Ruby learn from her mistakes and come to see beyond herself to the feelings of other people.

I gotta say, I loved this book!  My only warning would be that Ruby has a gay friend and the issue of homosexuality is lightly addressed, not with approval per se, but with the call to love each other.  I was slightly uncomfortable with it being in the book, but agree with the premise that we are called to love and befriend others, even when we don't always agree with their choices. The gay friend was a minor character.  I don't want to detract from the delightful things in the book in Ruby's character development and the lessons she learns about finding her place in a new town.  I enjoyed watching Ruby learn from her mistakes and come to see beyond herself to the feelings of other people.

The World keeps turning

I have now spent several days recovering physically from the miscarriage. Emotionally, the weight of it is settling down on my heart again.  Strange to have my arm ache to hold my baby when his/her very exsistence was so short in my life. But already I had formed the mother's love bond, had planned names, formed mental snapshots of my husband holding him/her, my girls playing with the baby, etc.  It feels cruel to have to abandon those images.

The other strange part is seeing that the world keeps turning. My oldest daughter still had to finish a scinece project, my husband still had to get to work early for meetings, the dentist still called to remind us of an appointment. I wanted to yell at everyone to stop.  It reminds me of how little we really know about what's going on in other people's lives.

I feel like I'm clinging to the side of a cliff and have to choose between letting go or doing the work and climbing back up to the top.  Everything seems hard right now. I know it will get easier, but I can't tell yet.
