Desperate to keep his law firm afloat, attorney Steve Conroy has agreed to take the case of convicted criminal, Johnny LaSalle, particularly since there's a lucrative retainer connected with taking this case. After interrogating Johnny LaSalle, Steve wonders, "Could be his long lost brother who was kidnapped at age seven from their bedroom and never found?" Is it possible to unravel the world of corruption and redeem his firm and a possible relationship with a long-lost brother?
My Review:
I finally got to finish this book from my birthday list. While I always love James Scott Bell's books, I had a harder time getting into this one for some reason. It wasn't until I was more than halfway into it that it grabbed me and then I gobbled up the rest of it with great interest.
Steve is a lawyer who can't catch a break. He is haunted by the kidnapping and murder of his brother from his childhood and the suicide of his father shortly thereafter. He is overcoming a drug addiction and a facing a divorce. If that wasn't enough, his law pratice is barely scraping by and his clients don't always pay for his services. Desperate to make his practice survive, he meets with a potential new client, but walks away when the convict claims to be his brother. When the evidence starts to prove that Johnny is actually his brother, Steve's judgement is overcome by his desire to have a relationship with his brother. So when red flags start coming up about Johnny's current beliefs and activities, Steve tries to overlook them. Unfortunately he's getting in over his head and that's where the book gets really interesting. And the plot twists get more and more fascinating!
In typical Bell fashion, he kept me guessing and turning the pages. An interesting look at how people can take Bible verses and twist them to serve their own devices. I liked how Steve was able to finally find his faith even in the midst of the dark cult world which he has begun to fear.
