My Thoughts:

Loved the style and voice of Christina's Schofield's writing! In the midst of her personal struggles, she manages to be witty and funny in a heart-wrenching way. Like how she notices how out of it she is that she puts velcro in the refrigerator. She also grabs the reader with Bible verses that speak to each part of her journey.  And she speaks to how to go on, even when the prayers for a miracle healing go unanswered. 

A very good book! Really spoke to my heart and my own questions.

Review of "Friendship for Grown-ups" by Lisa Welchel

My Thoughts:

My church library recently started up a book club and we read this book as part of a book club selection. I am grateful to Welchel for her honest and brave insights and personal revelations that were the heart of this book. I definately took some good snipits of advice about friendship from reading this and our book club had a wonderful discussion about it and about our own experiences. It also gave me the prompting I needed to take a good look at how I was treating my friends and the encouragement to pursue deepening some of my friendship.  My only reservation was that I felt her personal sharing of her own emails and correspondences was a bit over-the-top and her specific friendship instructions were a bit hard to discern specifically and more implied through anecdotes.

Overall, a good book with lots of insight.

My Thoughts:

Well, this one gave me a lot to think about. I'm not even sure how I feel about it; but I think that's kind of the point. To think about this stuff I mean. I didn't always agree with everything she wrote and I worry slightly about some of the text where I felt like the author was standing on the edge of a slippery slope as far as absolutes of the Bible and my faith go. But again, I think that was kind of her point.  She wanted to be able to ask hard questions about God and feel like that was ok. Sometimes I had to take a deep breath and try not to read too much into her illustrations and recognize the purpose of asking the questions.

I think the reader has to remember that this is a record of her journey. I have a journey in my faith too. I, too, used to be in a place where I thought it was wrong to ask questions of God; to wonder why we could give Him credit when our plane was on time, but not wonder why someone else's plane crashed. I like that Held Evans gets her questions out and allows for tough questions that don't have answers.

This book has opened a door for me, in a sense, because it is prompting me to research some of my own questions. Questions that I had been ignoring before, which only became a separation between me and God. So, I am reading some more books and looking for my own journey. I think Held Evans would be pleased that her book sparked me to explore and develop a more interactive give and take faith discussion in my own life. I don't think it would matter to her so much if I agreed with her conclusions completely, as long as I was asking the questions and doing the work to find my own discoveries.

"Be the Change" Giveaway Part 2: "Outlive Your Life" by Max Ludado

Based on a number of books I've read lately and a bunch of books I'm planning to read soon, as well as our church's sermon series and my own personal convictions, I am doing a giveaway of a series of books that all speak to the theme of "Being the change you want to see in the world." Review of "Choosing to See" by Mary Beth Chapman

Description:

Grief is a journey many of us take at one time or another. For the Chapman family their journey began with the accidental death of their 5 year old daughter, Maria Sue, whom they adopted from China. In Choosing to SEE, Mary Beth Chapman shares her struggles with the tragic loss of Maria Sue, her journey to heal, and the unexpected path God has placed her on. Even as difficult as life can be, Mary Beth and the Chapmans choose to see with faith and hope.

My Thoughts:

What an amazing and faith-filled story Mary Beth Chapman has to tell. I was crying and laughing along with her as she wrote of both the tragedies and triumphs her family has experienced.  The Chapmans are a testimony to faith and the strength of admitting to brokeness while relying on God's strength to survive.  I was especially touched by how they honored their son, Will, who was driving the car that struck Maria Sue, and spoke to his pain and how they have prayed for and loved on him.   The book reminded me of the importance of our task as parents to bring our children to the feet of Jesus and teach them of our faith in a way that's authentic and real.  A must-read!

I've got books of all kinds to read.  I've got fiction, non-fiction, and teen books to get through devour.  I've decided that having you come on this journey with me will make it fun!  So, during the next 4 weeks I am putting the names of 14 regular Christian fiction books, 7 non-fiction books, and 7 teen/young adult books into a bowl and drawing them out to read and giveaway.

Book giveaway for Day 5: (non-fiction) Get Off Your Knees and Pray by Sheila Walsh

Today's Question: This book is all about prayer, do you have a prayer request you'd like me to pray about for you? Or if that's too personal, where do you like to pray?

My Answer: My prayer request would be for guidance in making a decision about what middle school my daughter should go to next year, the possibly-questionable public school with good academics, the Christian school (with no one she knows going there her age), or moving to a suburb for a smaller school but new friends again.  No answer seems to give me peace.  I like to pray in the shower, in a journal wherever, or in bed at night.

I always love reading Sheila Walsh's books. She has a way of writing that is personal and real. She speaks to a woman's heart.  I enjoyed this book very much. Her thoughts about prayer were genuine and thoughtful and, while not necessarily new thoughts for me, they were good reminders captured with meaningful illustrations.
